The Juvenile Delinquents came to life as a novel, first published in Australia in 2015 it sold out the original run of several thousand books. Pre-production commenced in Australia for a local adaptation. Several thousand teens applied for the ensemble, auditions were held in 5 states. Refused support from Screen Australia, the NYC Governor’s office poached the production as Big Bull Productions became the first ever recipient of an E2 Visa to make film in the USA, this allowed all Intellectual Property rights to be retained, an important step in building the franchise. Sadly, it meant dismantling the Australian production to pass the opportunity to US cast and crew. The Film is still proudly Australian financed with an Australian Writer/Director/Producer. Somewhat of a dual citizen the JDs is eligible for both the Australian and US Academy Awards
Once disembarked from Australia, camp Juvenile Delinquents set up in Chelseas NYC March 2018. Filming was scheduled to begin in under 6months max, without budget for missed days the summer film window could not be missed. Production elements started to fall into place and things remained on track until casting begun in May.
NYC is a very film friendly town, with backdrops recognised the world over. The Juvenile Delinquents covered Manhattan, Queens , Brooklyn and Upstate NYC. Our Hospital scene was filmed in a disused hospital with the help of Rockland County, we were due to film on Staten Island but got screwed over so the 'beach house' got moved to the Far Rockaways. The penthouse scenes in Williamsburg were shot during a heatwave, after the entire grid went down every item including water needed to be ferried up 23 flights of stairs, our production trucks ended up locked in until power was restored.
Over 10,000 teens applied for the cast before the notice needed to be closed, the sheer volume of numbers quickly set back production to early August. Three Groups quickly formed, the younguns some of whom applied under the 16 minimum ( Cheeky!) The true to age and the 90210 crew. Nick skewed things toward true to age, but it was a battle of the Dannys which finally put the mater to rest. Auditions were held in NYC but actors came in from LA, South Carolina, Utah, Maryland, Texas, New Hampshire, Florida, New Jersey...... almost everywhere
The cast and crew were the United Nations, at one point there were people from 20 different backgrounds and a multitude of sexual persuasions and orientations.
We are the JDS family - We are Film - Nothing else matters.
During casting an opportunity arose to fill the cast with children of celebrities which benefited production and distribution but whitewashed the roles but Director Neil Goss opted for talent over advantage and has never regretted it. Satisfied he had not embarrassed himself with the final product he set off towards goal two, getting the story out.
Midway through filming cast and crew started to arrive into the microwave that was our Penthouse location with stories of bad cheques. Being Australian Neil thought he'd accidentally transposed the unique US Month/Day/Year date into Day/Month/Year Order but as the numbers escalated it was clear something had gone wrong. While the crew built first set-up and the actors and MUA team prepared Neil blasted bank employees until one of them finally fessed up the NSA had frozen the accounts. The large amount of foreign money coming in coupled with the quick disbursement for our Australian financed movie being made in NYC got red flagged as potentially being one of two very undesirable and highly illegal operations. Thankfully our identity and purposes was quickly sorted but the banking dilemma was far from over.
Special Effects SFX was another important facet of the Juvenile Delinquents production. Silicon genius Tony' O Brien from Oblivion SFX secured the role after sending in some very strong test imagery. Tony did such a good job one of the scenes had to be dropped from the movie as it was too real and put our ratings in danger, we could not afford to go any higher so sadly it ended up on the edit room floor but we will release it as an added bonus here soon
Juvenile Delinquents is classified R (17+) in the United States.
Juvenile Delinquents is Classified: MA15+ in Australia.

Thanks to the wonderful support of the folks at TCL Chinese Manns Theatre Complex the Juvenile Delinquents got off to a fantastic start. But they did not make it easy on us, we had to take on an incredible array of films. We played 4 times a day and with $6k in takings form a single screen we did enough to earn our first holdover as the current Academy Award winner made way for Bloodshot in Week 2, We were hoping for our Rapunzel of Death to lodge at the same house forever young Marilyn resides for a bit longer but Covid ended our run on day 10 when the whole industry was shuttered.
